AMPLIFYING VOICES || Ft. Choreographer My’Kal Stromile

In honor of Black History Month, we are amplifying the voices of Black dancers and artists at Boston Ballet.

Today, former Boston Ballet Artist and current choreographer My’Kal Stromile is taking over Instagram Stories! Join My’Kal for a special look at his choreography coming to the stage at the Boston Ballet Ball this weekend, Feb 8.

My’Kal’s choreography extends well beyond Boston. At Juilliard, he received Choreographic Honors three years in a row and was awarded the school’s Hector Zaraspe Prize in 2018. In 2023, he created Form and Gesture for Boston Ballet.

This past fall My’Kal was commissioned to create, Word for Word at the Paris Opera Ballet, notably as the first black American male choreographer to create a world premiere for the Paris Opera's Season Opening Gala. Hear from My'Kal on what this experience has meant to him:

“Creating Word for Word for the Paris Opera Ballet at age 29 was a profound honor—an opportunity to engage with the history of one of the world’s most storied ballet institutions while bringing my own voice, my own lineage, into that space. As a young Black American choreographer, standing in the Palais Garnier, shaping movement within its walls, I felt the weight of tradition but also the urgency of progress. That experience was not just about creating a ballet; it was about expanding the conversation of who contributes to ballet’s future. To now share my work with Boston Ballet during Black History Month feels like a full-circle moment—a celebration of the past, present, and future of ballet, reflecting the many voices that shape its ongoing story.” -My'Kal Stromile

Stay tuned as we continue to share more stories within our Boston Ballet community.
