SECOND-HALF ADJUSTMENTS LEAD TO 3-0 WIN OVER LASA: The JV boys soccer team secured a commanding 3-0 victory over LASA, staying in control despite a tough first half. Key halftime adjustments helped McCallum dominate the midfield and finish strong.

Junior Evan Herrin credited the team’s ability to shift tactics after halftime as the turning point in the match.

“We made sure that we were going to win the midfield and be able to control the rest of the game,” Herrin said. “We need to stop just kicking it up and hoping it works out. The way we need to win games is through our midfield and then up and through.”

McCallum started fast, with junior Thomas Seibert scoring just 25 seconds into the match after he intercepted a LASA pass and fired a pass to a streaking Gianni Lento who drew the goalkeeper out of position, which created an open net for the opportunistic Seibert after he gained possession of the rebound.

After the initial fireworks, the first half was a grind, as LASA kept McCallum pinned in its own half and created multiple scoring chances. Sophomore goalkeeper Kevin Calel came up big with several key saves to keep the Knights ahead.

With the wind in their favor, the Knights came out strong in the second half, controlling possession and finding more attacking opportunities. Junior Cyrus Wiggin doubled the lead off an assist from Herrin, and later, in the 64th minute, Herrin put the game away with a goal of his own, lofting a shot over the keeper after receiving a pass from Jon Castillo.

Defensively, the Knights held strong, with a critical slide tackle from Waylon Deatly stopping a dangerous LASA opportunity in front of goal.

“We played really well, especially in the second half,” Herrin said. “We were able to control the midfield better and play through them instead of just over the top.”

McCallum faces Cedar Creek on the road Friday at 6 p.m.
