I used to be anxious about telling my kids about my deafness. I was afraid of when they’d realize I wasn’t “perfect.” But I realized that didn’t serve any of us. Because I am deaf/hard of hearing, my children get to grow up in a DHH household. They get to learn how to be inclusive and what accessibility looks like in order for our lives to flow. 

When one member of the family is deaf or hard of hearing, you become a DHH FAMILY.

Many of my CODA friends (looking at you communicoda , mahalgonzaleschildress and mia_child06 ) naturally narrate what sounds are or where they are coming from, instantly know the look on my face when I’ve missed something, repeat and rephrase or use sign language without a blink of an eye in noisy environments. It’s the BEST and I feel at ease and a part of it all. 

Parents: Raise your children to OWN who they are, role model advocacy, give them power of choice and say over  the life they get to live 🤟🏽✨💕 Had my parents let my diagnosis shade how they saw me, I bet I’d still be playing small.
