THE END OF AN ERA, THE START OF MANY MORE: Tuesday evening, the girls basketball JV-B team put everything into their final game against the Bastrop Bears. Despite ending up on the short end of a 54-24 final score, the players took great pride in their individual and collective improvement over the course of the long season. JV-B coach Ivan Gonzalez believes the girls played well under pressure from the Bears.

“We learned that Bastrop had combined their JV and freshman teams, so they came out with a lot of power,” he said. “For most of our practice yesterday, we focused on our press breaker and playing aggressively. It was challenging because we didn’t know what kind of pressure they were going to put on us; however, at the end of the day, they did well. As the game went on, they adapted and were able to have a more open mindset.”

Some newer players had a strong learning curve throughout the 24-25 season, and Gonzalez is proud of his players’ efforts to consistently improve.

“With our JV teams, we’re always focused on making improvements,” he said. “When we reach the end of a season like this, we’re always asking ourselves, ‘Are we growing?’ ‘Are we making progress on the things we’re working on?’ As far as this season went, I believe our girls made a lot of progress, both big and small, leading to a successful season.”

Since JV-B mostly consists of younger players, Gonzalez explained how the girls will have to continue putting in the effort throughout the rest of the year if they hope to move up in the ranks for future years.

“It all depends on how you work during the offseason,” he said. “During the season, it’s relatively hard to improve as an individual player because you’re too focused on the team and running plays. During the offseason, you improve as an individual, so it’s really up to them to take that time and put in the work. We have girls on this team with so much potential, it’s just what they’re gonna do with that potential.”

“We’re a program that hopes to be strong at every level,” Gonzalez said, “so we want to continue being competitive in the district and of course having fun.”
