Now, this is an earned goal against. It always seems like you have to put a disclaimer on breaking down something. I think you learn more by breaking down good goals against and figuring out how to put yourself in the best position. The key on this goal against is reading the threats as the play develops. Whenever there is a threat of a screen or a deflection, it is paramount for the goaltender to stay as compact as possible and shift their body to the save. On this play, Fedotov gets extended on the strong side tip. If he shifts and drives his knee while compact, he gobbles up the deflection. Practicing situational awareness and knowing when you can go with a smothering save, as opposed to a reactionary save, will allow you to thwart more of those Grade A  plays. With the skill of the goaltenders going up, players are going to get more creative. Being able to read developing situations will allow you to put yourself in the best ideal position to make the save.
