KNIGHTS 55, EAGLES 31: The girls varsity basketball team defeated Cedar Creek Jan. 28 to complete a season sweep of the Eagles in district play.

Senior Sonya Petersen said that she walked onto the court at Cedar Creek High School feeling optimistic about the game.

“I was feeling excited and ready to play, and hoping we could beat them by more than we did last time we played them,” Petersen said.

The Knights defeated Cedar Creek 58-32 at home on Jan. 3.

Ultimately, the Knights won by 24, less than the 26-point margin of their first victory.

Petersen said that to improve, the Knights need to reduce turnovers and prevent their opponents from going on scoring runs, but she praised the team’s offensive strengths in the game.

“I think we did a good job at pushing the ball up the court in transition and taking good shots,” Petersen said.

Being a senior with four years invested in Mac basketball, three of them on the varsity team, Petersen’s mindset has changed on the court.

“Because this is my last year, I’ve learned to make the most of every game because there are only a few left,” Petersen said. “I find it easier to not put as much pressure on myself as I used to, as long as I do my best and enjoy the process I’ll be happy with my last season.”

Petersen’s advice for anyone thinking about trying out for basketball is that it’s tough but rewarding.

“I’d tell them that in McCallum girls basketball they are sure to be pushed to be more physically and mentally tough and will be joining a great community with amazing people,” Petersen said.

After finishing the regular season on Senior Knight last Tuesday, the Knights start their state playoff run next Monday when they travel to Westwood High School to to face the Georgetown Eagles in the bi-district round of the 5A Division 1 playoffs. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.
