🖤 Black History Month Spotlight: Green Polonius Hamilton 🖤

Born in Memphis in 1867, Green P. Hamilton was a trailblazer in education, music, and literature. A graduate of LeMoyne Normal Institute, Rust College, and Columbia University, he dedicated his life to uplifting Black communities through knowledge and culture.

📚 Education Pioneer:
In 1892, Hamilton became the principal of Kortrecht High School, the first public high school for African Americans in Memphis. Under his leadership, the school flourished, setting the foundation for future generations.

🎶 Musical Legacy:
Around 1900, he organized the first Black high school band in Memphis, raising funds through concerts to buy instruments and uniforms. This band didn’t just play music—they toured the Mid-South, breaking barriers and inspiring young musicians.

✍️ Author & Historian:
Hamilton published two powerful books:
	•	The Bright Side of Memphis (1908)
	•	Beacon Lights of the Race (1911)

In The Bright Side of Memphis, he celebrated Black excellence—documenting Black hospitals, businesses, churches, and profiling professionals like lawyers, doctors, teachers, brick masons, chefs, chauffeurs, and more. His work remains a priceless record of Black life in early 20th-century Memphis.

🏫 Lasting Impact:
His name lives on through Hamilton Elementary, Hamilton Middle School, and Hamilton High School. Green P. Hamilton passed away in 1932 and rests in Elmwood Cemetery, but his legacy continues to inspire.
