At the 3rd Annual Black Male Summit, during the “Fixing Our Communities” panel, Uche emphasized that we need to treat gun violence like a disease. This perspective urges us to move from reacting to violence to preventing its spread.

Like a disease, gun violence has causes, patterns, and widespread impacts. To stop it, we must address its root causes—(generational) poverty, lack of quality education, systemic inequities, trauma, and inadequate mental health resources. Just as we contain diseases by targeting their sources, we must do the same with violence.

Prevention is key. This means:
	•	Investing in Youth and Education: Creating opportunities and hope beyond violence.
	•	Mental Health and Trauma Support: Breaking cycles of violence by healing trauma.
	•	Economic Opportunities: Reducing poverty that often fuels violence.
	•	Community Engagement and Policy Change: Empowering communities to lead the change.

This call to action challenges us all to think differently and act with urgency. If we kill the disease at its root, we not only save lives but also create thriving communities where every person has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
