The varsity boys basketball team won its final district game against LASA, 75-54 on Tuesday night, officially clinching both a playoff berth and back-to-back district championships. The last time McCallum secured two district titles in a row was during the 1989-1990 and 1990-1991 seasons. For the nine seniors on varsity, the game was their last in the Don Caldwell Gymnasium.

The Knights started with an offensive onslaught against the Raptors, ending the first quarter ahead 24-3. The Knights won the second quarter but only by a point as LASA found some success in the second quarter. The Knights headed to the locker room at the half ahead 40-18.
LASA cut into the lead slightly in the third quarter, but Knights’ lead was never threatened as McCallum cruised comfortably the rest of the game to an easy rivalry victory.

Senior Tommy Ammerman, who scored 18 points, said that keeping the district title at home was a goal the team has been working on since the end of last season.

"We knew we were going to have a chance," Ammerman said. "We have the same core guys this year, so we knew we [could've] been undefeated."

The Knights finished with a 11-1 district record, with their only loss being by one point, 49-48, against Cedar Creek on Jan. 28. Even though the team had a successful district run, Ammerman says that there are a couple of areas of concern to address before the playoffs.

"We need to just clean up the turnovers," he said. "We had a few turnovers that were just not worth it."

When reflecting on highlights from the season as a whole, Ammerman said that the Austin High tournament they played in November was good preparation for the rest of the season.

"We played a lot of 6A teams, so that showed us that we can compete at a high level in Central Texas," he said. "Coming back to district, [the tournament] helped us because our district isn't very tough, so playing tough teams gets us ready for harder teams in playoffs."
