Ida B. Wells used her writing to make sure her voice, and the voices of Black Americans, were heard—all without access to the vote.

Wells grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, during the height of Jim Crow laws. Always a teacher, journalist, and advocate, Wells gained attention at age 30 when she conducted her own investigative journalism on a dramatic lynching event. She published her findings, Lynchings in the United States, which was eventually expanded into her own book, The Red Record, receiving international acclaim.

Her journalism angered the white people in power, and her office was burned down threateningly. Ida fled Memphis and moved to Chicago. However, from a safer location, she continued writing for justice and actively participated in anti-lynching campaigns and suffrage movements.

We learn from Ida that there are many ways to make a change. While casting a vote is powerful, so is advocacy. Stay involved and make your voice heard!
