Dr. J.B. Martin (slide 2), Dr. B.B. Martin, Dr. A.T. Martin, and Dr. W.S. Martin were four visionary Black entrepreneurs, medical professionals, and sports executives who transformed Memphis’ Black business and sports landscape in the early 20th century.

Who Were They?
• Dr. J.B. Martin – A pharmacist, businessman, and president of the Negro American League, he co-owned the Memphis Red Sox and helped shape Black professional baseball.
• Dr. B.B. Martin – A key figure in the development of Martin Park, making the Red Sox one of the few Black-owned teams with its own stadium.
• Dr. A.T. Martin – A physician and entrepreneur who helped expand the Martin family’s business empire, which included pharmacies, real estate, and sports ownership.
• Dr. W.S. Martin – A respected Memphis physician and businessman who contributed to the Red Sox’s growth and the family’s influence in politics and business.

Legacy

The Martin Brothers built one of the most powerful Black business empires in Memphis.
