Black History Month | Joe Perry, Springfield's Preeminent Black Golfer & Champion

You can’t tell the story of golf in Springfield without recognition for Joe Perry. In 1953, Perry made history as the first Black golfer to win the Springfield Republican City Open. 

A dominant force everywhere he played, Perry set records at Veterans Memorial Golf Course and helped bring legends like Charlie Sifford to Springfield, providing unique opportunities for the Black golf community through the Home City Golf Club organization.

Perry’s impact wasn’t just about competition, he also offered clinics at a local community center and was eventually named Springfield’s greatest Black golfer.
