This week's #WorkoftheWeek is a huqqa base featured in the McMullen Museum's current exhibition, "Wonders of Creation: Art, Science & Innovation in the Islamic World," as an example of the Jade arts valued from China to Iran for its purity and durability. Described in the Minerals section of al-Qazwini's cosmography "Wonders of Creation and Rarities of Existence," jade was associated not only with status, wealth, and power but also with healing, prolonging life, and immortality. Huqqa base. Mughal India, ca. 1740–80. Nephrite jade; carved and inlaid with floral scroll composed of rubies, emeralds, and diamonds set in gold. Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia, 2020.8.51.
