The varsity boys basketball team extended their season at least one game longer in a 72-66 overtime win against the Pflugerville Panthers tonight at Austin High. The victory is the team's first bi-district victory since 2021 when they beat Manor 56-39 before losing to Kingwood Park 48-37 in round two.

Junior Ethan Plummer said that it was rewarding to see his peers' hard work finally pay off in a playoff win.

"I've lost two [bi-district games] in my career, it just really stings when you lose in the playoffs and you see your seniors upset," Plummer said.

Pflugerville jumped ahead 16-9 at the end of the first quarter. The Knights almost caught up by halftime, but the Panthers kept the lead 24-22 at the end of the second quarter. Coming back from the break, the Knights built a seven-point lead, 41-34, to close out the third quarter. With one minute and 23 seconds left in the game, McCallum's 52-43 lead—and the bi-district title that would come with it—seemed safe. However, due to a technical foul and a handful of Panther free throws, the game was tied at 57 as the clock ticked to zero.

In a four-minute overtime period, McCallum sealed its first playoff victory in four years by outsourcing the Panthers by six points. The game's top scorers were senior George McCoy with 25 points, senior George Brode with 18 points, Plummer with 13 points.

Plummer said that the main thing that affects the game's outcome is mindset.

"We could've easily dropped our heads and felt like we were out of it, but we never really pointed fingers at each other," Plummer said. "We just stuck with it and kept fighting, we knew there was a lot of game left."

Tonight was not the Knights' first meeting with the Panthers. McCallum lost to Pflugerville 39-38 on Dec. 28, and in a similar fashion to tonight's game, the Panthers secured that win with free throws. After that first game, senior Felix Kahlor said that the Knights needed to stick with their game plan and trust each other. Plummer echoed Kahlor's sentiments after tonight’s win, attributing McCallum's loss in the first game to a lack of communication and trust.
