Ever wondered what it takes to be in a Mardi Gras dance krewe in New Orleans? Turns out, a lot—so I went straight to the expert: my mom. Former president of the Pussyfooters, 13-year veteran, and so dedicated she turned my childhood bedroom into a full-blown costume closet. (Love you, Mom 💗.)

These fabulous ladies start practice in October to master 8 different dances—because dancing a whole parade route is basically an endurance sport in sequins. And the costumes? Wigs, bras, headpieces, full glam—it’s a whole production before they even hit the streets.

The Pussyfooters have been bringing the sparkle to New Orleans since 2001. And after hearing all the prep that goes into it, it makes me want to cheer them on even louder on the route.
