#OnThisDay in 1965, The Black Arts Movement was initiated by LeRoi Jones, who would later change his name to Amiri Baraka, during a press conference in New York City, just one day after the assassination of Malcolm X. 
 
This timing was significant, as Malcolm X’s legacy greatly influenced the movement’s focus on cultural pride and activism. Baraka’s first major endeavor was the establishment of the Black Arts Repertory Theatre and School (BARTS), which served as a vital platform for promoting Black artistic expression and cultural empowerment. Interestingly, the Black Arts Movement was not only a reaction to social and political turmoil but also aimed to redefine Black identity in the arts. It sought to challenge the mainstream narratives and elevate the voices of Black artists, writers, and thinkers. The movement produced an array of literature, music, and visual arts that expressed the struggles and aspirations of the African American community, laying the groundwork for future generations of artists and activists.
