We see Kirsten Chen’s (@hotgothwriter) names in bylines across platforms on the world wide web and newstands alike. Her voice is one that keeps time with the pulse of culture itself by unearthing it, using integrity as her compass, the way home kept lit by a striving for creative freedom wielding control.

As a first generation Chinese-American who grew up between the OC’s conservative, suburban vibes and Nagoya, Japan, Kirsten always felt different. Ever drawn to the subversive, her interests skew niche as she collects rare fashion and art books, random Chinese publications and vintage pornography (the photos featured here showcase scans from her collection). As a passionate archivist, her identity is defined by her curatorial taste and her artist statement is “ if it's not sexy, I don't want it.” Undefined by place or background, visibility is a matter of nuance and experience – feeling most seen when she’s in the middle of nowhere, wearing a designer that no local would understand. Like we said, nuance.

Through her practice of archiving and collecting “oriental” porn, Kirsten feels as if she’s simultaneously liberating and protecting the women portrayed – because they look like her, it’s a process of also confronting fetishization. Having acknowledged the socio-economic and political history that comes with it and emasculation alike, she thinks that if more Asians weren’t afraid to fully live their truths, speak up for themselves or be abrasive, more people would finally get it right about our identities.
