The Mean of Philosophers Falls Short

For Socrates and Aristotle, virtue is found in the mean—a balance between excess and deficiency, achieved by human effort. But from the perspective of infused virtue, this middle ground is actually deficient.

Why? Because grace does not seek moderation—it seeks perfection in charity. 

The philosopher’s mean aims at human excellence, but Christ calls us beyond it: “Be perfect, as your Heavenly Father is perfect.” (Mt. 5:48)

The Christian life is not self-improvement—it is divinization.
