The varsity boys basketball team’s season ended in a second round 60-40 loss to Fort Bend Marshall on Friday. The loss ended the high school basketball careers of nine seniors.

The Knights (23-10) found themselves in a hole early, trailing 21-6 at the end of the first quarter. The score in the remaining three quarters was 39-34 in favor of Marshall (34-2).

Senior George Brode said the team did very well throughout the game.

“The way we carried ourselves following the first quarter was impressive,” he said. “Besides that quarter, it was a 5-point difference between us and them. Our ability to keep our heads up and not back down kept us alive.”

Brode emphasized the importance of the first quarter.

“They came out hitting three after three,” he said. “We didn’t adjust until we were too far behind. We probably could’ve adjusted sooner.”

With his high school career coming to a close, Brode admits his final game was emotional.

“I couldn’t have been happier to do it with those guys at that point in time,” he said. “Towards the end of the game was where it was really hitting me how this would be the last time I truly stepped foot on a basketball court as a player I felt no remorse, regret or embarrassment on the way it was going to end. It was probably the most bittersweet moment I’ve felt. I was extremely proud of myself, my teammates, my coaches and our team. I will always remember this year and look back only with good memories. These guys are my brothers, and I will always be grateful for this sport and my teammates and everything I have received from them.”

Brode remains confident in his younger teammates.

“I hope next year they can bring a district three-peat,” he said. “I bet they can go even further in the playoffs.”

Brode took the time during his interview to say thank you to everyone who was part of his basketball experience.

“I want to say how grateful I am for all my teammates, coaches and mentors during my time playing basketball at McCallum,” he said. “I know I will cherish the memories I made along the way. McCallum will always feel like family to me and I know I’m going to miss it like crazy. There’s nothing in the world like McCallum.”
