Annie, the Campanile matriarch, has called Berkeley home since she appeared in 2016. Soon after, Cal Falcons, a group of scientists and volunteers, was established to help the birds flourish.

“I feel sad that she might be gone, but I also want to recognize that she has had an incredibly successful life,” said Sean Peterson, a scientist with Cal Falcons.

While the cause of her disappearance is still unknown, experts say the most likely culprit to be the nationwide outbreak of Avian Influenza, commonly called the bird or avian flu.
