DP Sue Gibson led the filming for the BBC series Big Cats in a remote part of Mongolia, where a temporary camp was constructed for a month-long stay. The expansive skies and endless views made it a significant challenge to track a small, well-camouflaged Pallas’s cat—an animal never before filmed for TV. Sue relied on local trackers who had installed camera traps for a conservation project, though the cats’ habit of changing dens often meant starting from scratch. Temporary hides were built from rocks and camouflaged with netting in a landscape with few trees, where any new element could easily be spotted. Despite these challenges, the cat’s mother allowed close observation, granting Sue intimate access to her kittens as they suckled, played, and practiced hunting. With long summer days averaging only about four hours of sleep per night, the breathtaking landscape—and even the unexpected presence of inquisitive silver voles—made every moment memorable, even as a week-long storm flattened parts of the camp, including the toilets, and temporarily caused the loss of the cats. In the end, Sue Gibson captured more footage than anticipated using the RED #HELIUM8K with the Canon 50-1000 (CN20) lens mounted on an O’Connor 2560 fluid head and Sachtler heavy-duty legs.
