Each year, 28 February commemorates the discovery of the Raman Effect by Sir C.V. Raman in 1928.

How did he discover what we now know as the Raman Effect? 

While on a sea voyage, Raman observed the blue opalescence of the Mediterranean and wondered about the origin of the phenomenon. It was here that he first observed the effect with a polarizing Nicol quartz prism, during which it quenched the surface reflection of the sky on the sea surface and demonstrated that the blue color of the sea was unattenuated. 

Raman also studied light diffraction by acoustic waves and the effects of X-rays on infrared vibrations in crystals. 

He was knighted in 1929 and awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for work on the scattering of light in 1930. Additionally, he established the Raman Research Institute in Bangalore, the Indian Academy of Sciences, and the Indian Journal of Physics.
