An investigation by Texas game wardens uncovered a black-market deer breeding ring that was allegedly smuggling deer, falsifying records, and disregarding regulations in order to circumvent CWD rules.⁠

More than 20 suspects have been charged with around 1,200 crimes as a result of the ongoing investigation. One felony charge accuses the suspects of falsifying CWD tests by poaching wild deer and swapping those tissue samples with samples from breeder deer.⁠
