DAY 1 COMPLETE: @SXSWEDU kicked off today, with @AustinISD journalists from Eastside and McCallum completing two interviews with prominent speakers at this year’s event. The interviews were made possible through AustinISD’s partnership with PBS NewsHour @StudentReportingLabs. The students from Eastside and McCallum complemented each other today. Eastside students showed the McCallum students how they recorded interviews, and McCallum students shared how they conducted live interviews.

In addition to the two interviews, Shield journalists attended various sessions from speakers who traveled across the country to share their stories.

In the morning, Katherine Garcia Gonzales of Eastside interviewed librarian and TikTok influencer Mychal Threets. Threets talked about a wide range of subjects including his favorite books, the essential role of literacy and how book banning helps to discourage young people from reading.

In the afternoon, junior Shield reporter Beatrix Lozach interviewed author Nic Stone, whom she familiarized herself with prior to the interview by reading Stone’s books.

“I found her super inspiring,” Lozach said. “I have a certain reverence for people who practice radical honesty and acceptance, which we talked about. It was enlightening, edifying and vivifying getting to talk with her. I loved being around someone who loves words as much as I do and who’s so passionate about storytelling.”

After this interview, Lozach was able to reflect on the influence of literature on modern society or the lack thereof.

“I feel like in this day and age, there’s such a scarcity of people who genuinely love stories,” she said. “It’s so dystopian. People just avoid reading. They avoid things that scare them. People seek out echo chambers. And even if they don’t seek them out, you have social media, where they’re abundant.”

This has been Lozach’s first year attending SXSW EDU, and she has enjoyed dipping her toe in on her first day. She hopes to create a ripple effect in her generation.
