Nearly four decades after it was decommissioned and left to fall into disrepair, London’s iconic Battersea Power Station is back. This time around, it’s the centerpiece of a £9 billion mixed-use development megaproject. The goal? Transform a 42-acre (17-hectare) site into an eclectic collection of shops, housing, offices, tourist attractions and public space expected to draw 40 million visits annually once fully completed in 2030. And for residents, it means a 15-minute live, work and play neighborhood—no lengthy commute required.⁠

Coming in at number 8 on our #MIP2022 list, the eight-phase project is led by Battersea Power Station Development Co., working with Malaysian site owners PNB, Sime Darby Property, S P Setia and the Employees Provident Fund. And to make sure the site lives up to all the hype, the team also recruited preservation experts historicengland, along with a slew of architecture and design firms including wilkinsoneyre, michaelisboyd and Lucas UK.⁠

Even as it retools the space for the future, the team has been incorporating small tributes to the structure’s illustrious past. One of the station’s control rooms, for example, was reincarnated into a bar�, with “engineers” serving up cocktails surrounded by the site’s switchgear racks and auxiliary equipment. The glazed ceramic tile walls, original stainless steel control panels and overall brutalist design were meant to “make the perfect backdrop for ‘that’ photo opportunity,” says Battersea Power Station Development Co. CEO Simon Murphy. Translation: It’s intended to be Instagram gold.⁠
