## Caption

In September 1918, the New Jersey College for Women opened its doors to 54 students.

The new school, part of Rutgers University, was the culmination of a five-year fundraising campaign led by Mabel Smith Douglass and the New Jersey State Federation of Women's Clubs. The college’s first students – with Dean Douglass at the helm – trained for careers as librarians, secretaries, nurses and social workers – a full two years before they won the right to vote.

Renamed Douglass College in 1955 and later Douglass Residential College in 2007, the college has a proud alumni network of more than 40,000 graduates.
