#ItTakesaWoman: Dr. E. Delores Stephens has dedicated more than 50 years of extraordinary service as a Distinguished Professor of English at Morehouse College, profoundly shaping the lives of students and colleagues with her expertise in English literature and commitment to academic excellence. In recognition of her legacy at the College, Dr. Stephens was one of two Presidential Award of Distinction honorees at the 2025 Convocation in which her oil portrait that will be displayed in the the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel was unveiled.

Dr. Stephens is celebrated as a trailblazing educator, scholar, and mentor whose guidance has transformed the lives and careers of world-class Morehouse Men who now shape the nation’s consciousness. Among them are such notables as Congressman Sanford Bishop, filmmaker Shelton “Spike” Lee, Rhodes Scholar Nima Warfield, journalist Geoff Bennett, and attorney Randall W. Jackson, among many others.

Her academic journey reflects an unrelenting pursuit of excellence, earning degrees as a Merrill Scholar and Valedictorian of Spelman College, a master’s from Atlanta University, a Ph.D. from Emory University, and advanced credentials from the University of London and the University of Exeter.

During her tenure, Dr. Stephens’ innovative teaching, deep connections with students, and distinguished scholarship have elevated the cultural and academic fabric of the institution. Her prolific body of work, including influential publications, has enriched the literary world and inspired generations of scholars. Dr. Stephens provided leadership as Chair of the longest-serving chair of the Department of English and established the Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society at Morehouse.

Dr. Stephens has been honored with numerous accolades, including the Vulcan Materials Company’s Teaching Excellence Award, further solidifying her legacy as one of Morehouse College’s most impactful educators.
