March-ing Forward!

NASA’s Orion spacecraft has been keeping busy inside NASAKennedy’s Neil Armstrong Operations and Checkout Building. After teams lifted Orion out of the Final Assembly and System Testing (FAST) cell, the human-rated spacecraft received its four solar array wings, provided and installed by EuropeanSpaceAgency. The solar array wings, attached to the service module of the spacecraft, deploy after Orion reaches space to provide power for the journey around the Moon and back to Earth. Each solar array wing has 15,000 solar cells to convert sunlight to electricity and is nearly 23 feet (approximately 7 meters) in length when fully deployed. In space, the arrays can turn on two axes to remain aligned with the Sun.

Next up, teams will encapsulate the service module with three spacecraft adapter jettison fairings. Soon after, the spacecraft will move to other NASA Kennedy facilities to be fueled, integrated with its launch abort system, and finally stacked atop the SLS (Space Launch System) rocket in the Vehicle Assembly Building.
