Born in Alabama on March 13, 1916, John W. Rhoden became a pivotal figure in 20th-century sculpture, known for his innovative approach and ability to merge artistic traditions from around the world.

Members of the Arcadia University community celebrated this renowned African-American sculptor–and his two bronze sculptures currently on display in Landman Library–on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2025. Dr. Brittany Webb, the curator of the John Rhoden Collection at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA), which donated the sculptures, gave a lovely lecture about Rhoden's life titled, “John Rhoden: An American Artist Around the World”.

"By teaching and displaying the work of these artists, we at Arcadia advance our core educational mission, we expand representation for our students, and we demonstrate our good values," said Jill Pederson, Ph.D. University Advancement was pleased to work with Arcadia’s College of Arts and Sciences, Arcadia Exhibitions, and the Landman Library team to bring this artwork to campus. And an extra special thank you to PAFA, Dr. Brittany Webb, and Joyful Films.

Happy birthday, John W. Rhoden! We are more than happy to celebrate you and your legacy! Watch the full video here: https://vimeo.com/1065190682 (link in bio).
