Ford, Miller Leading BHS Track and Field

In his 20 years as a track and field coach in town, Bakersfield High head coach Kim Jenkins has seen some of the top athletes in the sport from Kern County.
So for him to make the proclamations like he has for his two standouts in Jalen Ford and Damari Miller, there is reason to take notice.
Ford, who finished third in 100-meter finals at the CIF State track and field championship last June as a sophomore, is currently the top sprinter in the state in the 100 (10.46 seconds) and 200 (21.49) this season.
“Jalen is the fastest we’ve ever seen in this county,” Jenkins said. “He’s a beast. Hates losing. Love competition and is maturing in his workouts. Nothing but great things. Would not surprise me … sub 10 (seconds).”
Lofty expectations, but Ford knows that the pressure is on him and it’s his chance to shine after setting an all-weather county-best time of 10.34 seconds in the state prelims last season.
“It can be overwhelming, the amount of pressure that’s with me every track meet,” Ford said. “So I feel like I have a certain standard to reach that goal.”
Miller, who burst on the scene last season, is No. 1 in the Central Section in the boys long and triple jumps.
On Wednesday at the first Valley League meet at Griffith Field, Miller’s mark of 45 feet, 8.5 inches in the triple jump catapulted the senior to No. 13 in the state.
Two hours later, Miller, with the crowd clapping in unison, jumped 23-5 in the long jump on his fourth and final attempt, and is fifth-best in the state this season.
“He’s got a really nice bounce, really nice flow,” Jenkins said. “Another mild-mannered guy. A really smart guy. He loves to work. He loves the process. Big things in his future.”
With Ford and Miller leading the way, the expectations are high for the boys team as a whole for the Drillers.
“I feel like we can make a nice run at state,” Miller said. “Jalen running his great times like he always does and me jumping the way I am, I think we can do great.”
