The classical guitar program held its spring concert on Tuesday in the MAC.

The beginner ensemble performed at the guitar concert, conducted by Andrew Clark. Janie Gravette, in her first year playing guitar, is part of the ensemble. 

“It’s been a lot of fun to listen to the music everybody has been working on,” she said. “I also enjoyed watching all the other ensembles and small groups perform.” 

Gravette hopes to go on with guitar and join the intermediate or advanced ensemble next year.

Shirel Bahar played “Misirlou” with her quartet. 

Behar said the piece was more complex and took more time to prepare than the piece her quartet played a year ago. 

“We were keeping it very close with this one, and we weren’t as prepared as quickly as we were last time,” Behard said. 

Despite these concerns, the quartet performed well. “We rehearsed a lot and got it ready in time. I felt good to know I was done with my performance, and it was a good experience.” 

Behar has enjoyed chamber this year and is excited to go onto the upcoming chamber competition in the hill country. 

Emily Piper also played in a chamber quartet. The group played music by Domenico Scarlatti. Piper said that the preparation for the performance was stressful. 

“I was glad they were able to prepare in time for the concert, [and] I was excited and nervous to go on stage,” Piper said. “But I knew that we were going to do fine because we had put the work in.” 

Piper said that Mr. Clark had been nervous that the piece wouldn’t be ready in time for the concert, but they were ready and greatly impressed the audience. 

“I think we did well,” Piper said. 

Their performance was the most complex and technically difficult small group performance of the night and led into the chamber’s large ensemble performance. 

Each one of the chamber players has played guitar for many years, and their expertise was clear once they took and commanded the stage.
