The waterfall looks just the same – it’s everything around that has changed.

Triple Falls has always been one of the most visually striking waterfalls in the Columbia River Gorge, pouring out in three separate segments as Oneonta Creek cascades down one of many sheer drops on its way to the big river. These days, the scenery around it is striking as well – not for what’s there, exactly, but for what’s missing: the lush forest that once surrounded it.

Most of the trees and brush around Triple Falls burned during the Eagle Creek fire in 2017, a blaze that claimed roughly 50,000 acres over three months in one of the most beloved natural landscapes in the Pacific Northwest. Some greenery has grown back in the five years since, but it will take much longer for the forest here to fully recover.
