Born in a refugee camp on the border of Thailand and Myanmar, Constable Ni Reh moved to Australia with his family as a child. It was the desire to pay forward the support his family received from the community and support organisations that drove him to consider a role in policing. ⁣
⁣
“I want to be a role model for my community and lead by example for the younger generation…I learned that the job aligned with my values and would give me an opportunity to give back from the community I received so much from, so I applied.” ⁣
⁣
But it wasn’t all smooth sailing. Like many, his first attempt at entry wasn’t successful - but he wasn’t going to let that stop him from achieving his lifelong dream. ⁣
⁣
Not to be deterred, Ni continued his studies and found work to grow his network and experience in different industries. Ultimately, he secured an internship with Victoria Police as part of his tertiary education, further exposing him to the organisation and its people - including his mentor Inspector Paul Gauci, who was one of the many who guided him along the way. ⁣
⁣
Like many, he aspires to join one of the specialist units - “maybe Crime Investigation Unit, PORT or CIRT” - but there’s plenty of time for that. ⁣
⁣
“I’d like to spend the next few years learning and exploring the job before I decide on the area of policing I’d like to pursue. For now, I will continue to focus on working closely with the communities and helping those in need.” ⁣
⁣
We look forward to seeing where your career will take you, Ni, and wish you all the best. ⁣

Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (IDERD). This day reminds us that while celebrating multiculturalism is vital, so too is supporting and advocating on behalf of our multicultural communities. ⁣
