When Acting Senior Sergeant Yuki Onuma applied to become a police member in 2011 (after a little encouragement from her colleagues), she had no idea that she would become the first Japan-born police officer in Victoria. ⁣
 ⁣
Today, Yuki is a well-respected sergeant working within the Organisation Policy Unit. She also assists with cases involving Japanese nationals as requested by other departments, as well the consulate office, embassy, and law enforcement agencies of Japan. ⁣
 ⁣
For Yuki, speaking a language other than English is “just like having an additional ‘tool’ in the kit bag.” Being able to offer the Japanese community additional support and understanding of shared culture is the best part of her job.⁣
⁣
And while the additional ‘tool’ does come in handy, she acknowledges the significance of considering cultural appropriateness, and differences in judicial systems and laws that may affect a victim’s expectations from police. ⁣
 ⁣
“Our community is diverse, and policing need to be reflective of this.⁣
⁣
“A diverse workplace assists us in learning about different cultures and improves our interactions with the people we work and serve in the community.” ⁣
 ⁣
This year’s theme for #CulturalDiversityWeek is ‘Embrace the Journey, Shape Our Future’, which encourages people to honour the unique and shared cultural journeys of our diverse communities. ⁣
 ⁣
“This helps us identify and find similarities in our cultures,” says Yuki. “Sharing personal stories helps foster connections built with trust and understanding, as we create a common ground between people from different backgrounds.” ⁣
 ⁣
