Did you know that approximately 25 per cent of the NHS’s carbon emissions overall are linked to medicines? And around 60 per cent of the emissions in primary care come from prescribing?

By taking action to support the adoption of more sustainable prescribing, general practice can play a key role on addressing the climate crisis and supporting patients to stay healthier for longer with less reliance on medications.

Our ‘Towards Green Prescribing in General Practice’ report makes 13 recommendations under four key headings. With general practice in crisis after years of underfunding, it’s challenging environment for practices to address overprescribing and polypharmacy so a system-wide strategy is needed to support the delivery of greener prescribing.

The report includes case studies from general practices utilising schemes to reduce the environmental impact of inhalers for patients with asthma, and schemes to increase access for low-income households to fresh fruit and veg boxes to help patients with type 2 diabetes.
