The first arriving units encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from the century-old structure’s roof. Incident Command was quickly established as crews set up essential water supply for aerial operations and initiated an aggressive interior attack. Primary and secondary searches of the building were completed to ensure no one was inside. With the wind-driven fire advancing rapidly, defensive operations were put in place. Aerial units were utilized to help bring the blaze under control. Maumelle Fire Department also responded to assist. Firefighters worked tirelessly throughout the evening to extinguish the flames and preserve as much of the historic property as possible. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, and all animals and livestock on site were accounted for and safe. The St. Joseph Orphanage, built in 1910, has stood as a landmark in North Little Rock for over a century.
