According to Storyful, a team of surf fishermen reeled in a great white shark on a beach on Hatteras Island, North Carolina, on Saturday, March 15. Dan Rothermel and Luke Beard captured footage of the fearsome fish. Rothermel estimated the shark to be 12 to 13 feet and between 1,000 to 1,400 pounds.

Rothermel told Storyful Beard was the person who originally hooked the shark. He told the local news outlet Island Free Press that the shark jumped when it “first got hooked” and they were pretty sure it was a great white. Once they saw the shape and size of its dorsal fin, they were able to confirm that suspicion.

According to the news outlet, who quoted Beard, it took the team 35 minutes to reel the shark in, but less than 90 seconds to release it. “It’s a federally protected animal, so you have to release it as fast as possible,” Beard told the outlet. “You can’t be scared of the fish. It’s definitely fishing at the next level, so you have to know what you’re doing, or learn from people who know what they’re doing.”

Rothermel told the outlet they never took the animal fully out of the ocean. “As soon as we got it to the point that it wasn’t floating anymore, we started the process of getting it back into the deeper water,” he said, later describing the shark as “magnificent.”

“Our number-one concern was getting her back into deep water. She swam off and disappeared back into the beautiful magical-blue water of Hatteras Island,” Rothermel wrote in the caption of an Instagram post.

According to the National Marine Fisheries Service, “the white shark is one of the most widely protected sharks globally.”
