For most of the 19th century, the French art world was a tightly controlled arena where tradition reigned supreme. Only prestigious academies dictated what was considered “good art” and who could become an artist.

But then came 1874. That year, a group of visionary artists decided it was time for a change. Eager to break free from tradition, they organized their own exhibition, sharing their fresh and inventive creations with the world.
