What is the right difficulty for obstacles and terrain at an OCR championship event?🤔

This is probably one of the most widely discussed things within OCR. And I know, it’s NOT EASY to standardize 🤯

👉My view: I personally think more consistency in level is needed, both within “obstacle difficulty” and “terrain/running difficulty” especially federated championship events.

🔸Terrain: Have elevation, trail, and flat (preferably a combo) - but keep it within the same “frame”. Not having one year only flat running, and next year only mountainous & technical.

🔸Obstacles: Find a level for how long/complicated rigs minimum & maximum can be, so people have a chance to adjust how much time to use on obstacle training beforehand vs running.

🔸Rules: Stop the 60-page rulebook & make obstacles intuitive to understand. Make rules to ensure no athletes gets advantages, but stop rules that cut bands for people stepping 1 cm outside a platform or touch something a little bit wrong 😅 Again, make it simple to enforce & intuitive to understand. Maybe even reintroduce mandatory obstacle completion. Because, if rigs are more standardized, they will not result in queuing, as earlier years.

I LOVE our sport is evolving with federation events. But I think we should keep very “outlying” formats of OCR to the private race organizers. For championships, agree on a more uniform level of both terrain & obstacle difficulty and rules 🙌

Would love to hear what do you guys think?🤔

NOTE: I say this with the deepest respect in my heart for the federations hosting these demanding events. It just seems a bit too random to me right now. I really believe that some more standardization will do wonders for taking our beloved sport of OCR to the next level 🫶 and for the sport to be taken more seriously by the broader elite sports community.
