It’s International Day of Education 📚 so we’re answering some frequently asked questions we get at the Museum! 🙋‍♀️

️⃣ Glass is a special kind of solid called an amorphous solid, which means it doesn’t have a regular pattern of atoms like other solids. The atoms in glass are all jumbled up, but they still stick together tightly. At room temperature, glass is hard and doesn’t change shape easily.

️⃣ No, this was not in Star Wars. “The Lynx” is reproduced from a sketch by the famous German artist Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528). Dürer drew the lynx, and other wild animals, during a visit to the royal zoological gardens in Brussels in 1521. In this glass sculpture, Klonowska displays a reproduction of this page from the artist’s sketchbook.

️⃣ While you can’t wear them, Karen Lamonte’s sculptures are modeled after real dresses!

️⃣ The biggest piece of glass here at CMoG is the 200 inch Disk! It weighs about 20 tons.

️⃣ Our Conservation Team is in charge of cleaning our glass! Almost all of the glass in the Museum’s collection (except for ancient and some modern) gets washed at least once. For that purpose, we have a large plastic sink. The plastic is softer than a metal or stone sink, which helps to prevent damage from minor bumps. The glass is washed with tap water and a mild conservation-grade detergent, followed by thorough rinsing with de-ionized water to prevent water spots. It is then dried with paper or cotton towels or allowed to air dry. Objects that can’t be washed in this manner are carefully dusted and spot cleaned with de-ionized water and or solvents when needed.
