People will try to argue that you don’t need soap to clean cast iron because heating it on your stove will disinfect and kill any bacteria.

Those people are missing a huge point.

Heat disinfects but it doesn’t clean- they are not the same thing. Using the very crude example at the end of the video, if there was sh*t in your pan and you heated it up over 200° for a few minutes, you would still have sh*t in your pan.

When we clean cast iron, not only do we want to remove bacteria, but we want to make sure we remove old food and cooking oil(unless your desire is to eventually have a crusty skillet).

Sure, you can clean your cast iron with just water or just salt, but soap is much more efficient. You can say ‘I’ve never used soap and my pans are fine,’ but just because something works, doesn’t mean it’s optimal.

I assume people clean their other cookware(like stainless) with soap, and if you know a lick about cast iron then you know soap will not remove the seasoning- so then why clean other cookware with soap but not cast iron?

And although my mantra is ‘soap is safe for cast iron,’ like I’ve said in a ton of my other videos, I really don’t care if you clean your cast iron with soap or not. What I do care about is people telling other people that they CAN’T clean their cast iron with soap.
