The #TrumpAdministration terminated federally funded legal defense services for over 26,000 unaccompanied children through the Unaccompanied Children Program (UCP), which had bipartisan support since 2003. These children, many of whom fled violence and instability in their home countries, are now being forced to represent themselves in court—some so young their feet can’t touch the floor in front of a judge. The move dismantled legal aid partnerships with 86+ organizations across the country, stripping away basic due process rights from the most vulnerable population in our immigration system. This decision coincided with increased deportations and detentions, heightening the risk of trafficking, exploitation, and abuse.
