Meet Duck Alum Duncan Moore 🦆📸

Duncan double majored in journalism and international studies at UO. After graduating in 2017, he landed an internship with the United Nations Environment Programme, launching a career as a multimedia freelancer based in Nairobi. His work takes him around the world, telling stories through video and photography for UN agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and news outlets.

The hands-on curriculum at the School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) helped prepare him for the field. "You graduate with an actual portfolio, and when I got my first internship with the UN Environment Programme, I was told this helped me to stand out from other applicants," Duncan said. He credits Professor Sung Park for pushing him to be critical of his work and embrace feedback, saying it's the most valuable skill he learned at the SOJC.

Duncan's advice to current students is not to be afraid of following opportunities outside of the US. “I went in 2018 for what was supposed to be a six-month writing internship with the UN in Kenya, fully expecting to return as soon as it was over. Seven years later I live in Nairobi. Because I moved somewhere outside of my comfort zone, I'm now lucky enough to get jobs that send me around the world, meeting new people and telling stories with my camera.”

Duncan recently returned to Oregon for the first time since 2017 to film a story on UO alum Amy Cordalis, BS '03 (political science) and the Yurok Tribe’s fight to restore the Klamath River, a success story he calls “truly special.”
