## Caption

A realistic portrait of an anonymous immigrant woman sweeping - Currently on view in the Seeing America gallery.  A committed activist and suffragist, Eberle believed that art should have a social purpose. Through her art practice she elevated the working class and made women’s work visible. In 1915, Eberle organized an exhibition of women artists at the Macbeth Gallery, New York’s first gallery of American art, to raise money for women’s suffrage.
