✏️⌨️ Day 1 of the IPT CTA included a session about writing. Typically students who are unable to physically write or who only scribble are not seen as writers! Participants left with a better understanding and knowing that 100% of their students are writers! The presenters, Meghan Hyatt (VCU T/TAC & AT Network) and Dr. Daniel Biegun (ODU T/TAC) were so excited they had to snap a picture!

🤩 The truth is, there are several stages of writing development! Those stages include:
✏️ Scribbling
⌨️ Marks and scribble writing
✍️ Letter-like forms and individual letters
🖍️ Letter strings and name
🖊️ Invented spelling
💻 Conventional spelling

🙅‍♀️ Writing does not include tracing and copying, arranging symbols, or pressing a switch with a prerecorded message. Though these are important skills for other areas of learning, they are not considered writing!

🫣 Worried because your students or children can’t hold a pencil? That’s ok! Alternative pencils are a great way for those with fine motor challenges to still have the opportunity to write their thoughts! They come in many forms, but have one BIG thing in common: they MUST include all 26 letters of the alphabet to be considered an alternative pencil. Keyboards, flip books, the keyboard on an AAC device, and eye gaze frames are all great examples of alternative pencils!

🪐 Participants also explored several writing activities. Of course, they were all space themed! 🚀 They made filled in speech bubbles for characters, created memes, wrote lists of their favorite planets, created a comic strip with their table, and even made a social media post!

📕 They were also given a vocabulary dictionary template to use with their students as they build their vocabulary. Dictionaries are a great way to help build student vocabulary and give them something to look back to as they write!
