🤝 The AT Network and the I’m Determined Project have a strong presence at this year’s International Division on Career Development and Transition (DCDT) Conference in Chantilly, VA!

🚘 In their session, Melanie Derry (VCU ACE), Meghan Hyatt (VCU T/TAC), and Lauren Whitlock (VCU T/TAC) presented on the importance of self-determination in AAC use. For the first time, they discussed combining the three psychological needs identified by self-determination theory (CAR: Competence, Autonomy, and Relatedness) and the 4 Ps of AAC (Present, Personalized, Persistent, and Patient) to support self-determination in AAC users. They also discussed the role of the communication partner in making this happen! 

🧩 At the end, participants were able to synthesize their learning by putting together three car puzzles; one for competence, one for autonomy, and one for relatedness. Participants were tasked with sorting puzzle pieces with scenarios highlighting the 4Ps into their correct car. There were many wonderful conversations!
