Yesterday marked five years since the first lockdown and as we reflected on the past five years since COVID-19, it’s clear the pandemic had a profound impact on us and our elderly loved ones.

Many older adults faced isolation and loneliness during the early months, but some have also experienced a renewed sense of life’s worth and deeper appreciation for social connections.

Community initiatives like age_uk “Time for Tea” events and companionship services like ours have been pivotal in providing opportunities for social interaction, reducing loneliness, and offering much-needed emotional support. These efforts have made a real difference, helping many older adults reclaim a sense of connection and joy.

However, challenges remain. A report from Age UK warns that, by 2034, 1.2 million people over 65 will often feel lonely unless we continue to focus on tackling this issue. It’s a reminder that while progress has been made, the road ahead requires ongoing attention to ensure our elderly loved ones feel supported and connected.

How have your elderly loved ones changed socially since the pandemic? Have you seen a shift in their confidence or social habits? What steps can we take to support them moving forward?
