ICYMI: Places I felt comfortable in as a Black traveler Part 2 [SAVE + SHARE]:

I’m really loving the conversations my last posts on this topic have sparked so here are a few more places where I’ve felt positively received as a Black traveler:

Guatemala 🇬🇹. I spent a month traveling across the country back in 2011 and most recently spent two weeks in Antigua, Lake Atitlan, and Guatemala City in 2022. When I was there this past February I spotted a number of Black female travelers who were mostly solo. Upon reflection, it’s not difficult to see why! Guatemala is affordable, extremely beautiful, and very welcoming. I highly recommend traveling there, particularly to the Caribbean coast where Afro-Guatemalan/Garifuna culture is prominent.

France 🇫🇷. It’s no secret that France is one of my favorite countries: I lived there for two years and have been visiting yearly for the last 20! Rich in African and Afro-Caribbean culture, I’ve particularly loved hanging out in Paris’ “Little Africa”/Goutte D’Or (18th, 19th, & 20th arrondissements)

Senegal 🇸🇳. While I haven’t been including countries with predominantly Black populations in these round ups, I still wanted to shout out Senegal. I traveled to Dakar solo in 2018 and was blown away by
its beautiful scenery, the good vibes/hospitality(referred to as “Teranga” by locals) and just how easy it was to blend in!

Mexico 🇲🇽. I lived in Mexico for a year and have visited many times since, most recently spending a month there at the beginning of 2022. While the affordability and cultural diversity of the country is a real draw for travelers, the growing Black expat community in Playa Del Carmen and Tulum is what keep many travelers (including myself) coming back! I even went to a big Juneteenth party in Playa Del Carmen last year!

Have you been to any of these places? What was your experience? Remember that your experiences “Traveling while Black/POC” may differ and THAT’S OKAY! We’re not monolithic but conversations like this are both helpful and necessary in terms of knowing what to potentially expect.
