Today, the Michigan Bands remember the late George R. Cavender on his birthday. Mr. Cavender became Assistant Director of Bands in 1952, working with Dr. Revelli until Revelli’s retirement in 1971, after which Cavender became Director of Bands. He served in this role until H. Robert Reynolds was named his successor in 1975. Mr. Cavender continued to serve as Director of the Michigan Marching Band until his retirement in 1979. Throughout his decades with the Michigan bands, Mr. Cavender always emphasized that life was not worth living unless one gave “150%.” His enthusiasm and drive for excellence made a lasting impact on the entire University of Michigan Band program. 🎶
