Did you know that you can use weeds as clues for the acidity of your soil?

Here are some common North Carolina weeds and the pH of the soil where they're most often found.

Acidic (pH < 5) Broomsedge, Carolina geranium, red sorrel. Chickweed, dandelion, redroot pigweed, wild mustard are pale and stunted.

Slightly acid (pH 5.2) Acceptable to most weeds, including jimsonweed and morning glory.

pH 5.8 – 6.0 Chickweed, dandelion, redroot pigweed, wild mustard thrive.

Alkaline (pH > 7) Buckhorn plantain, clover
